Killing Rogue Apps
Is there some renegade application on your machine that starts up every time you
boot? You've tried looking for it in the StartUp folder, but it's not there.
Where is the blasted thing coming from?
Navigate to this space:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
After selecting Run, you should see a listing of programs in the right pane.
Each program listed launches on start-up. Don't delete systray.exe, or your
taskbar will lose its tray area the next time you boot. There may be other entries
here that deal with power management or other system functions, so be careful.
Other listings are fair game--remove whatever annoys you!
The Usual Disclaimer: Modifying the registry can cause serious problems
that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Use the information
provided at your own risk.
